Restoration Begins

Work has started on developing St Katherine’s – 900 years of history. Lindum Construction is the main contractor for the restoration project which is planned to open to the public towards the end of 2009.

Scaffolding is now going up around the church, this in itself is a large project with a building the size of the church and is estimated to take three weeks in total. The first stage of the restoration work is to remove the slates and carry out work to the roof. Whilst the scaffolding is around the building, work will also be carried out to the windows. Where necessary, the glass will be removed and taken away for conservation and repair and remedial work carried out to the surrounding stonework.

Inside the building contractors are putting in place coverings to areas and items that need protection whilst restoration work to the interior is carried out. These include the font, the pulpit, the beautiful patterned Victorian tiles and the granite columns.

Restoration work to the Lincoln City Grand Organ is also ongoing and is being carried out by Kirtland and Jardine, who built the original organ. The balcony in the church will be removed and strengthened to support the organ.

Behind the scenes, plans are being developed for the exhibition and events programmes and for learning activities. A heritage update and open day is planned for Friday 6 February. Visitors will be able to find out about the latest developments and also find out about what is planned to take place in St Katherine’s.

In the meantime, before St Katherine’s opens, a number of heritage events will take place in the adjoining Priory Community Centre. Please visit ‘Events’ for details.
