What is St Katherine’s?

St Katherine’s will be a vibrant new tourist destination, cultural resource and heritage and education venue for the local community, the city of Lincoln, the region and beyond. The centre will be housed in the fully restored Wesleyan church of St Catherine, an outstanding, grade II listed nineteenth century building that stands on the site of the Gilbertine priory of St Katherine, founded in 1148.

The site has a rich history reaching back over at least 900 years. In medieval times, the priory was at the heart of the local community and welcomed visitors from far and near. St Katherine’s will continue this tradition begun centuries ago when it opens its doors after the restoration.

The new venue will offer visitors interactive displays exploring the history and heritage of the site, inspirational exhibitions and a lively programme of festivals and events for all ages. St Katherine’s will support an innovative and evolving programme of learning opportunities for all ages.

When will it open?

St Katherine’s will be open from Saturday 20th February 2010

Why will the centre be called St Katherine’s?

Many documents and maps relating to the medieval priory refer to St Katherine’s Priory. The priory was named after St Katherine of Alexandria, patron saint of learning, who was tortured on a wheel and subsequently had a firework named after her. Surveys with the Advisory Groups for the project, the community and individuals, overwhelmingly supported naming the centre St Katherine’s to reflect the historic associations of the site.

Who is funding the project?

The total value of the project is £1.94 million. The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded the project a Stage 2 Pass of £1.329 million in addition to development funding. Lincolnshire Enterprise has also funded the development phase. WREN, Lincolnshire County Council, Lincoln City Council, East Midlands Development Agency and Renaissance East Midlands are also supporting the project. The Priory Trust continues to explore funding for further elements, such as architectural lighting, seating, learning resources and for ongoing development of exhibitions, events and learning resources.
